Space is presented to the public as Utopia. It is how heaven was sold to the first Christians in the Roman Empire. In both cases, the man of average to lower intelligence who is rather easily duped would respond favorably to a prospect of an eternal paradise. The wise man, of course, knows such a place to be nonexistent.
In reality, space is a lot blacker and colder than yr mums cunt and unless we can discover a way to keep humans in stasis for thousands of years (possibly by freezing embryos and raising the children by an AI), then we won't even be able to make it to the nearest solar system.
