the middle of a number line would probably be defined as a point where the "length" in front of the point equals the length before it. By definition, every point on an infinite line is its middle. Zero is just the additive identity and usually the base element for inducing the line

the number line is a man made concept that doesn't really exist, 0 is at the middle because we say it is. Also it makes sense logically assuming your number line includes negative numbers. Otherwise 0 will never be in the middle, it will be at one end 100% of the time.
