I am attempting to figure out how I can group a subdivision of 5 eighth beats (+3+4+ ; 4/4 time) into three equal parts so I can give a specific rhythm to a chromatic passing tone. It is not immediately obvious to me how to do this, so I came up with the equation y=[2^(x+5)]/3 where x, greater than or equal to zero, equals the number of subdivisions since the original and y is equal to the number of beats in each triple. I am looking for the ordered pair at which x and y are whole numbers. How to find?
