The point is that an object with zero mass (such as a photon in free-spacee) can obtain velocities not restricted by its own mass.
That's the whole Einstein relativity thing, that time bends around the constant speed of light, not vice versa.
There's no reason to believe that c isn't a constant, it would mean that something else is constant such as time, and that's too wacky.
