Why wouldn't this work? I've looked into the electric plane problem, but it feels everyone's eyes have blinders because the discussion revolves entirely around batteries.

Why couldn't an airplane work similar to a tram system with a close by power source, delivery electricity through the air? It would limit the flight paths of the planes, yes, but most planes are taking very specific routes.
