1. Approach them with a rudimentary question about a fundamental of their individual research. Make it seem like you care.
2. Make the statement that "Grad students are overworked."
3. Make the statement that "The mistreatment of grad students is not unnoticed--quite the contrary, most people in academia are well aware of it."
4. Drive the point home that nobody cares about grad students and they actively go out of their way to not take action with regards to their pseudo-slave status.
Bonus points for chemistry grad students, since they are generally the most high-strung and overworked subset.
