>Why does this matter?
A dominant idea in society is that races are either cognitively equal, or that a cognitive gap between races is the result of (mostly) environmental factors. In recent years, many institutions have implemented policy regarding racial equality, which attempts to rectify a disproportionality between racial groups representation in higher education and workplaces relative to their share of the total population. This is done through preferential treatment based on race instead of merit, which puts high performing individuals at a disadvantage depending on their race. If it turns out that racial disparities in life outcomes are not the result of environmental factors, but instead cognitive differences between races, race based policy could be unwarranted and counterproductive.
