My sister had a bad experience a few years ago, and it really showed me the difference in how men and women are treated.
I won't describe it in detail, it's enough to say that it was pretty uncomfortable, but she was never in any real danger. I did not think about it as particularly terrible when she told us about it. A man having an experience like that would be expected to deal with it and move on. Heck, I know many men that had much worse experiences.
My sister on the other hand got bombarded by people telling her how horrible it was and how she needed to process the situation in detail, over and over again and go to different kinds of therapy. Almost like the women (and the guys trying to score sympathy points) made it a competition to appear the most sympathetic by explaining to her how horrible it was.
She ended up with a PSTD diagnosis and she is still afraid to leave the house one year later. I blame this 90% on the way she was treated after the incident rather than on the incident it self.
