Uni takes a lot of time and effort, and doesn't leave you with much free time. At least if you go to a decent uni and take it seriously. So some normal social behavior is out, like spending a lot of time at the pub. A lot of people in STEM were outcasts in highschool, probably because many are bad at communicating, high IQ low EQ, some are on the spectrum. Also, hobbies that are intereting to someone into science might be weird to others. I'm a biologyst, i used to search the northern mountaines for animal bones, slime mold and other microbes to put uner a micrsocope, or i would spend hours observing gammarus, squatting in a stream or cataloging all the species i come across.
I don't quite know if its some specific genetic factor that makes one both less social and more proned to go into STEM or if its psychological and weirdos end up i STEM to cope with being weird.
