How would you go about doing that though? Would you just need to step way down the voltage so it's more manageable right?

I'm thinking of making a small prototype and using one of those big Tesla coils to test bolt capture technology. Let me know thanks

To capture it is easy. The hard part is to preserve it. I would instead use it for some short-time events, like melting gold, or turning coal into diamonds.

One thing that comes to mind is using the intense energy of lightning to melt salt, molten salt is used in storing enregy. You can then use the standard method of using the heat of the molten salt to generate electricity. All you would have to figure out is how to efficiently transfer the energy of lightning into the salt (and what kind of salt). But once again, you should be coming up with possible directions, and then reading up on relevant literature.

Well, in that case, good luck. I guess i was hostile, because i though this was an academic endevour, in which cahe this approach would be amaturish, but if it is just a home project, and maybe you don't have a lot of research experience, then my hostility was unnecesseary.
I suggested the salt thing, but i'm no expert in this field. You could try to store it in various forms of chemical energy, like a bond that forms in high energy conditions, or you could store it in the form of heat.
Have you tried dicking around with google scholar, writing in different key words to see if any relevant research has been done?

Diving into all that academic research can be a bit overwhelming at first, i definitly found it hard when i first encountered it in the first semester of my BSc. You almost never find exactly what you are looking for. But youll find some paper that mentions some mechanism that cna be helpfull. You then stitch together something new from all the mechanims and methods proposed and used by others. Then you try to make it work. Document everything, if it worked, awesome. If not, well, read some more. Find out what went wrong. Draw conculsions from your failiur. That fact that this is what you do with your boredom is good enough on its own.

you're far too retarded to make or design anything working, but what you need is bascially a really tall tower that reaches into the clouds. If you run a wire from the top of it and connect it to the bottom you can harvest all of the electrical potential from clouds as they pass through. Still has the same problem as lightning though in the fact that charge density is sporadic and most of the time you're gonna not be collecting shit.

If you could invent or build a giant fucking super capacitor that holds many gigawatts and charges instantly maybe you could "capture" lightning. truly though it would be very lossy and you'd really want to collect all of the energy before its wasted and turned into light and noise
