What should I focus my studying on?
I'm doing computer engineering right now but I don't know what to specialize in.
Ideally it should be a science that's mature enough to be turned into an engineering solution, but new enough so that it's not over-saturated.
Kind of like the internet in the 90s...
AI? Robots? CyberSec? BlockChain?Embedded Systems?

Yeah but doesn't high performance computing have a huge entry barrier? I don't really have any capital so would that mean grad school? Haven't really considered going to grad school.

AI and crypto mining in recent year have both been done on GPUs, yes, but there are a bunch specialized AI chips being developed, including one by Jim Keller. I don’t know if those are still useful for crypto.

How is bioinformatics free money? Almost no jobs in industry. Lower pay than webdevs.
The upside is that there is a ton of academic positions, and they prefer a CS/Math background over bio.

Become an expert in this subject matter area and you have secured yourself a position for the foreseeable future. CRISPR, Gene editing and that sort of thing is an alternative option for guaranteed success.

I would specialize in something your local professors are best at.

Best professors can provide you with deeper understanding of their field,
some random guy offline with an email address won't be able to teach that even with full resume of buzzwords.

If you want to stay in the field I'd probably lean towards quantum computing with AI/ML applications.
We're going to hit another AI winter shortly and imo quantum computing will then kick of the next AI/ML boom just like big data/cheap computing did 10-15 years ago

If the guy is in your uni, that’s a top guy to learn from. Solid state batteries are a brewing niche, lots of hope but also lots of hype, just FYI.
If you can get into a class with him go for it. You could learn something you’ll never going to learn from other people.

Because specializing at the bachelor's level limits you severely and gives too shallow of breadth. Do something like EE/CE, ME, or CS then specialize in biomedical (also do some wet chemistry / assay work to mog chemoids)
