At least i studied relativity and QM so i know what they are and what the scientists involved did. With witten its all "Dude i dont know what he did but forehead. Dude strings. Of course i have no background in either but that's true for 99% of /sci/ and 99.99% of mainstream public. Witten is a specialist in an obscure fringe field. And yet he gets hundreds of threads and TV specials. How does that make any sense? Why would non-specialists care about either him or his work?

i sometimes watch his talks but he seldom gives “colloquium” level talks. most of them are super high-level just explaining his latest paper or something. and honestly if you can follow that kind of talk you’re probably in the highest echelon of hep-th

he has given some wider audience talks like the one in OP. but it’s rare. even more rare as he gets older

Obviously that's not basic maths, but expanding epsilons as metric tensors is one of the most obvious steps. It's the same as expanding the identity in some basis in QM, which you do non-stop. Mendrit just sucks ass.
