The guys who just released the huge geometric deep learning paper? The one full of differential geometry and algebra? They were all CS PhDs, and I recall at least 2 of them had only CS as their major from undergrad onwards.
If we’re gonna entertain the ambitious assumption that physicists have “deep math knowledge,” I don’t really understand how this is an argument against CS PhD’s not knowing math or not being able to study what is literally their field’s best known work. CS PhD’s often publish in math journals. CS PhD’s are the authors and coauthors of learning theory books. Studying Hilbert spaces is not a sacred task only math and physics PhD’s can do
