If trees are such a big deal that we are going great lengths to keep their huge numbers, why don't we just invest to figure out how to make our own oxygen and capture carbon dioxide by industrial means

Because doing so requires approximately the same amount of energy as is released burning hydrocarbons. So, if you're using fossil fuels to capture the carbon, you've accomplished nothing.

you mean chemically? it's very hard since the CO2 is usually the most stable byproduct so it's bond is strong and plants can manipulate molecules on a micro level while all chemistry done by humans is just mixing shit around. the calvin cycle taught at school doesn't do photosynthesis any justice, all of these are fuck me large and complicated molecules.

We could easily iron salt vast stretches of the oceans and get algae to photosynthesise CO2. Unfortunately this would prevent the trek to the stone age as mandated by the warmers who talk about boiling the planet, thus iron salting is strictly forbidden.

There are many things that are technically possible but prevented for non-technical reasons.

This field of research is very VERY heavily studied in chemistry. If you could develop a catalytic system which reduces CO2 to even like formic acid under mild conditions (relatively low temp/pressure) you would probably win a Nobel Prize, or at least get a nature publication.
