Both are gay and more effort than they are worth; we've already succeeded in living in a desert and (albeit briefly) living in the air

Okay, those are pretty cool ideas, and someone should actually work on those.
The important thing, though, is that none of those are impeded by travel to Mars. It's like saying we ought to get rid of television shows because the time spent making them could be better used on making movies. We can do all of the things you listed there in parallel. Moreover, it's likely that in the pursuit of travel to Mars, discoveries will be made that greatly impact life on Earth; we saw such a thing occur from the missions to the Moon, so really your argument is pretty poor.

How do you propose humanity surviving an existential crisis like an asteroid impact without having two separate planets we inhabit?

Humans are natural explorers, if we did not become a planetary wide species it's unlikely we would have made it this far. Humans NEED to become a multi planetary species if humanity is to survive. We will use up all the resources on Earth at the rate the population is growing and the vast amount of resources we consume.
