Is Mechanical Engineering For Plebs?

Started off as Computer Engineering, but then switched to MechE after freshman year.

Now I've noticed literally every pleb and midwit at my college is studying MechE, and I'm starting to rethink my decision.
It is the largest engineering field at my university, and many others. I'm starting to feel like I'm walking into an oversaturated market.

Should I switch? I hear electrical engineering is always in demand and is filled with nothing but stinky pajeets.

That's what I was afraid of.
It seems electrical engineers are the shit. At least career fairs seem that way. Tons of recruiters looking for them, hardly any students.

I think that might be a thing from your uni in particular. Usually, the midwit programme is CivilE.

There are a few things to notice. To begin with, there isn't really such thing as a "mechanical engineering market" nowadays. Even the name "mechanical engineering" by itself doesn't mean much. What I mean is that you shouldn't think of yourself as a "mechanical engineer" but rather find a particular industry you want to get into and then put your efforts into getting your position. A MechE degree by itself doesn't help you at all; but being a MechE graduate allows you to specialise in fields such as robotics, aerospace, marine, automotive, biomedical, systems, software, energy, and the list goes on. Once you decide on the specific industry you intend to get into, you can start preparing yourself according to what will be required of you. Of course, networking and a Master's will be a must.

However, you'll get fucked if you're the guy who graduates with a Bachelor's degree and nothing else, and starts looking for ""mechanical engineering jobs".

Most consumer electronic hardware is not designed or prototyped in the US anymore. There's still a large market for defense, medical, automotive, and industrial engineering within EE. From my experience you would be better off studying CompE, there's more jobs than pure EE and you get paid better because it's closer to software. Also in most of the CompE related roles I've found you really only need a Bachelor's, maybe a Master's later on, while to do anything in RF or DSP you need a Master's or PhD for even entry level positions. If your uni is flexible you can probably take most of the same classes as an EE anyway, that's what I did and ended up getting hired for something much closer to a CompE/CS role than EE.

The trick is to get a job that requires a security clearance because you can't be outsourced, can't be easily/quickly/cheaply replaced, and your value to an organization goes up significantly once you have one. Not to mention better benefits and a more limited applicant pool for said roles.

It only seems that way at first. Every time I try to make a post on this subject, I mysteriously sneeze and delete my post, so here's the simple version.

1. Install NixOS.
2. Figure out how to run a Debian VM from the command line with Qemu using a macvtap nic just in case something can't be made to easily work in NixOS
3. Make a shell.nix file that creates an environment for Jupyter.
4. Learn how to use Jupyter.
5. Install Emacs.
.... get you degree... retire... transcend... reincarnate...--
6. FINALLY learn how to use Emacs
7. Learn how to do all the weird tricks with Emacs Org Mode's noweb and #RESULTS features. This part is stupidly important.
8. Learn how to play with Emacs Org tables (in #TBL_FM hit C-' and then, in a lisp entry, hit TAB this will save your so much time).
9. Learn how to make http and similar requests with Emacs Lisp.
10. Learn how to use Guile.
11. Learn how to make guile-scripted breakpoints in GDB that, for example, plot the contents of an array in a C program using matplotlib.

Cogratulations, you can now eliminate 99% of the work needed to do most of the annoying part of mechanical engineering.

Next, we'll cover how to write Linux device drivers for your own instruments NO DONT RUN AWAY

Really though, do what I said, then it'll be really obvious why the nitwits are there. ME is in fact two different degree programs disguised as one. The first is for people who just want money, whose jobs get outsourced. The second is virtually nothing more than applied mathematics. Did you know you can do reliable fluid mechanics using cellular automata? No? Do what I said, and it takes about 5 minutes to test it for yourself (and a few hours of learning I suppose). Don't do what I said, and struggle for no reason. Want robots? Easy! How? Figure it out yourself, becomes a realistic response when you really can consistently and almost thoughtlessly transpose your ideas to a visual computer program in an hour or two.

As a sanity check, try to write, in C, something using Wayland, then figure out how to handle mouse input in Wayland. This takes several days. Next, write the simplest software raytracer you can imagine. This takes about 10 minutes. Next, turn it into a CAD program. How? Anything under your mouse casts a ray. If the ray hits a shape, such as a sphere, then clicking selects the sphere, duh. If you can render arbitrary surfaces, then you can also interact with them, although that takes more than 10 minutes to figure out. How on earth would this be useful? For example, in a particle simulation in 3D, agglomerate nearby particles into either a closed surface (a blob of fluid, basically) or a collection of connected voxels, ... and if you can render the item, then you can click on it. Tada, now you have interactive 3D CFD simulations for almost no effort. If you generate the particles with some CA CFD method (just invent your own randomly for fun, there is no point in making it realistic), then it also becomes easy to add dynamic moving things to the environment like propellers free to rotate. Now you can click and add, delete or modify blobs to study random silliness whatever you want.

Admittedly, that would probably take a lot more time than 10 minutes, but the point is:
1. IT work is not engineering, so learn how to automate that first thing.
2. Emacs is not engineering, so learn that well asap.
3. Programming is not engineering, so the advice example basically just asks you to find the point on a surface intersecting a line and stuff it into a computer program (what is it for a sphere? Derp see not complicated)
4. Writing on paper IS engineering. You just have to get through all the annoying stuff first.

Learning how to use NIX or GUIX is important because otherwise everything will fucking break the second you try to
- share your stuff with a colleague or
- run your old stuff from a month ago
Which still fails b/c mach-nix has trouble pinning pyth pkgs.

I forgot to mention for step 2 "a macvtap in bridge mode" so you set up the macvtap on every reboot for your project with the ip command and then set up the associated macvlan for your computer separately, once, with nmcli, which is actually poorly documented... I need to write a proper guide one day. Anyway even if you succeed the macvtap vm can't communicate with the macvlan vm even if you set your routes on your host correctly, so you have to do something else, and if you try doing this something else in nixos's configuration, your computer will fail to boot up fully and your video card fan will suddenly start WHIRRRING it really makes no sense at all.

Okay. It's probably impossible to do step 2 without writing an essay. Just install debian into a qemu vm for the few graphical applications that don't run on NixOS and forget easily communicating with it.
