If I recall correctly, the term "gender" in the sense as we know it today was coined by a New Zealand sexologist named John Money. Due to his unsavory experiments I've personally chosen not to use the term "gender" and use the term "sexes" instead. As far I'm concerned there's only two sexes or "genders" if that's what you prefer and those are man and woman. Now I'm not well-versed in the sciences but that's simply what I know on the matter.
