Is it useless?

In my case, I'm from a 3rd world country and work doing some polymeric materials with nanoparticles on it. They're expensive as fuck, have average properties and will never see any real-life aplication, other than giving me papers for continue my research and justify my monthly wage.
Off the record, most of my workmates think the same on their work.
