In a limited way, this is already happening. Designs for circuits are passed to an AI trained to make them more efficient, the AI was observed removing components believed to be essential for the device to work. The model was implemented and it was eventually discovered that some odd coupling/capacitance/magnetic effects in the new positioning of the elements enabled the removal of the components.
