To be conscious is to ride along a zip wire, where you make minute adjustments to your position along the way, and those adjustments feel both aware and unaware at the same time. The destination you are going to cannot be changed, because you are on a wire, but you know that the destination cannot be changed, because you are aware of being on a wire, hence all you can control is your descent, but even that control is illusory.
To be conscious is to react instinctually to various sensory inputs, and to be able to observe these instinctual reactions with a higher mind, but being unable to do much about it in any grand sense. It is almost as if we are just the viewers of our own film, and that we are so accustomed to watching it, that the seat we are in melts away, allowing us to be fully engrossed in the film.
