Is it possible to create something that unleashes radiation when broken?

Lets say you have some kind of chain. Then someone comes and breaks the chain and they keep it in their hands or on their person. Is it possible to put a chemical on the chain that does not cause radiation poisoning in the chain until someone breaks it?
