The issues with book exercises is that often you are guided to the answer, if a question appears in Chapter 13, of course it's going to be referring to the material covered in Chapter 13 for example. It's also easy to half-work out the answer, skip to the back of the book where the answers are and convince yourself "Oh yeah I would have gotten that if I tried".
