Did that study come out in 2014 because I would imagine there would've been some updates since then. But I did know a very good Republican friend of mine who's a mathematician and far more well-read then myself who I would describe as quite intelligent despite his humble denials of it. Now it should be understood that I have no sympathies for the Republicans or the Democrats so don't go pointing a finger at me and make any baseless assumptions, I also can't make any declarations about these matters because I'm no expert sociologist or neuroscientist.

I was gonna guess why, and it turned out I was right, based on the abstract:

Basically, people who are more well-off in life tend to be more economically "classically liberal", and such people tend to be more reasonable than people who are more economically leftist.

So Republicanism is somewhat of a confounder, here. As they say, social conservatism is correlated with lower intelligence (unsurprisingly to anyone here who isn't a social conservative, I think).

My guess is extreme social liberalism has a good chance of being correlated with lower intelligence, too. The belief set most correlated with intelligence is probably similar to what you see among most tech company founders - center-left on most social issues, free market-leaning on most economic issues
