The only "giant mobile machine" that actually exists is a ship in the ocean. You can't build a machine that can produce thousands of offspring at a time that can move around on land, it's not physically possible. So this means that either you are forced to produce all your future offspring out on the water, which is a terrible idea, or you are forced to put a lot of buildings around your land that are used as birthing facilities, limited by the initial amount of artificial wombs that you first built. In order to increase your birthrate, you'd have to continuously build more and more facilities, whereas the amazon women already have an innate ability to increase their rate exponentially each generation - one woman has 4-5 children, who each go on to have 4-5 children, and it goes on in that exponential fashion without needing to be either be immobile or waterlocked.
Also, women can perform research and labor when they're pregnant. They already do. That's not actually an inefficiency.
So basically, the amazon female small male master race is actually more efficient than the sexless small gray alien race who uses artificial wombs. They have two semi-dedicated sexes that are perfectly optimized for their role and that have a much higher degree of adaptability. The small males would be just as capable of combat as the gray aliens, if not more so because they are still male as opposed to sexless, and they wouldn't need to produce offspring in dedicated facilities (the women are themselves mobile, adaptible and intelligent). They can far more easily increase their population size and do so at an exponentially greater rate.
Having two biological sexes is more efficient than eliminating sex when it comes to competing against each other. If these two populations go head to head, the gray aliens lose.
