You're better off doing it in your dorm. Friend of mine mined in his dorm for at least 4 months before he got a notice that "somebody was using excessive electricity". Then he stopped. They may be more aware of this now though because he was mining back in 2012.

Why does it matter where you are when you buy them? Surely it matters where you install them, not where you buy them.

m8 universities have been expelling people for cryptomining for about a decade. The rules have been on the books for years, and they never needed explicit rules for it in the first place. The extant rules about "misappropriating university resources" are flexible enough to cover you using the universities electricity for cryptomining. And even if you thought the rules weren't flexible enough to ban that, what are you going to do? Take the university to court? Are you really going to waste money on lawyers just to get laughed at in court?

depends on the machine, just ballpark estimates here but fully optimizing high end cards gets you down to ~100-150w per card, or over 200w if you don't optimize, multiplied by 24 hours in a day then multiplied by power cost, let's say $.10 per kw/h, which gives roughly 30 to 60 cents per day per card.
