This is likely a result of the *potential* of alcohol to improve mental health when consumed in moderate amounts, and very healthy people having the self-control to drink a moderate amount, and being social, and not being overly neurotic about physical health, since they have nothing to worry about in that regard. If alcoholic beverages were deleted from existence, people would find other ways to relieve stress and socialize, and I'm sure average life expectancy would go up as a result, even for the subset of people who were not, or would not be heavy drinkers.
