Experimentally, 5 photons emitted in the same millisecond. Theoretically, any energy absorbed by the eye should lead to brain activity, regardless of strength or timing. Whether or not the subject is aware of the stimulus is unimportant.

The threshold is profoundly lower than I expected it to be. What is the scientific explanation for this? How can ~10 photos induce an electrical signal that can be distinguished from background noise.
