Can someone redpill me on planetary electromagnetic fields and how they protect a planet from solar radiation?

Conspiracy theorists are always going on about how Mars "used to support life" but I noticed that Mars has a very weak electromagnetic field compared to Earth's field. Since Mars's field is so weak it could never have supported life under perpetual cosmic bombardmant of solar radiation, right?
