The idea that "there is no such concept as race" has been around a long time but now people are saying there's scientific consensus. Help me out with this one.

1) I don't understand why they're even trying. NONE of these people whip out this line amoung black people and would be burned alive if they even suggested this around, say, black people complaining about how many cops are shooting them. It's an absolute mental backflip to push this idea around white people, but to clamp their tramp when in the present of black people.

2) The more rational ones, when you drill down into what they mean, are arguing that "race" is a cultural concept. That it's a "social construct". In other words "made up" or "fake and gay" as you choose. I'm not sure why don't don't just use "Ethnicity". Because likewise, none of these people would accept that white chick that claimed to be black.

3) The absolutely nutballers refuse to accept that pockets of humanity experienced genetic drift and acquired traits. They'll look you in the face and claim that "Africans and Asians look different" isn't true.

So help me out. Why the fuck are they even going down this route? How can they entertain this idea without it coming off as massively racist or anti-science?
