one time I botched my part of the lab report so hard that the next lab my partner ignored me and gave me the cold shoulder, I had to find a new partner, and they had to give a 5 minute speech about how it's our responsibility to check our partners work and not to email them about it.

I assume you're talking about the Hasslebach equation? It just tells you the pH of a buffer from its contents, or the concentration of the buffer solution from the pH and pKa.

Most "chemistry students", if they're undergrad, don't focus much on organic or biochemistry related things like enzymes. So it is unfortunately common to have situations like yours.
When I hear chemistry student, I think pure chemistry. (The kind that will be easily replaced through automation)
