What are your favorite algorithms, /sci/?
Mine is the Burrows-Wheeler Transform.
It's so simple and yet the fact that it's invertible is absolutely insane when you first hear of it.

The first row of the first matrix contains the word, plus an end-of-word indicator (#).
The rest of the matrix is formed by "rotating" the word.

The second matrix is the result of sorting the first lexographically.
The Burrows-Wheeler Transform is the last column of the second matrix.
The Burrows-Wheeler Transform results in a string that is better compressed and also invertible.
