As a food microbiologist, it's waaaaaaay cheaper to sample your tendies to agar/broth, run presumptive samples on more selective media, and only run still-presumptive samples for biochemical confirmation rather than start at biochemical.

We build this pretty awesome labs for near on a century now. LSU and the Corps of Engineers have a new one up and running recently with ORCS being such a problem. Next 20-30 years is gonna be a wild ride of funding for infrastructure and impact studies at odds as stuff really fails.
