The strains which cause breakthrough infections will proliferate and become dominant, this small foothold is what selects for more virulent strains. Even as we speak the virus is out competing vaccines. Vaccines are exactly like antibiotics unless they have a "sterilizing effect", i.e. they prevent infections altogether, like the smallpox vaccine. The covid vaccine is not sterilizing, hence why they only measure its efficacy in preventing hospitalization and death, not infections.

Being cold, tired, malnourished, etc, weakens the immune system, so more susceptible when exposed to a pathogen.

But need a flu virus to catch the flu, no matter how much the immune system is weakened.

We've seen this before in Manaus. Despite high Covid antibody seroprevalence, the virus just evolved into the P.1. variant and reinfected everybody. Vaccines are much stronger than normal antibodies, of course, but if antibodies are a small barrier, then vaccination is like building 10 foot wall and waiting for the virus to evolve into an olympic level climber.

I'm sure we'll learn from our mistakes in the future and mandate a minimum vaccine infection-prevention rate, probably something like 98-99%, but we've fucked ourselves currently. If our vaccines were just a little better at preventing infection, and we vaccinated 90% of the population in 3 months or so, THEN we would have a realistic chance at overcoming this.

Not significant enough. ESPECIALLY with our shoddy vaccine rollout over 6 months. That doesn't even make sense. A vaccine doesn't mutate to be more virulent to overcome neutralizing antibodies, it mutates the antibody binding sites. Whether it becomes more virulent is regardless of that. What we want to do is reach a threshold where there's enough immunity to current subtypes that the virus isn't able to spread effectively, which prevents the generation of new variants overall.

I don't know what you're arguing. Hypothetically if an immunocompromised person got the vaccine and was infected by a deadly strain, they'd hold it for a far longer period of time than if they weren't vaccinated, allowing the virus to evolve and transmit. The problem isn't mutation itself, that'll happen, it's that we're allowing mutations to exist which otherwise wouldn't be able to. Really, the virus can evolve just fine transmitting in the general populace, just at a somewhat slower rate.

That's not how it works: see the 1918 pandemic. Natural infection doesn't increase deadliness beyond a certain point, after which it naturally selects against it. Vaccines prevent this natural regression from happening by artificially lowering the viral loads and transmissibility.

Wrong. The virus can mutate in your frail grandma and grandpa, some people just naturally have weaker immune systems or less natural immunity to the virus, so they keep it longer. I never said it causes a shorter duration. Just that natural infection can only drive lethality of the virus down, see influenza A. We've already seen how vaccinations can drive up lethality, what more do you want? They suppress symptoms in the infected, symptomatic people spread the virus better than asymptomatic people, ergo the virus will evolve to cause more severe symptoms. It really is just that simple, the high mutation rates, lack of sterilizing effect and extreme levels of transmission don't help.

This is a phenomena called leaky/non-sterilizing vaccines. They're real, see Marek's Disease etc. But most vaccines AREN'T leaky. They stop infection or allow your body to fight it very quickly. We're locked into vaccination now though, because the media spent five months shilling that the second wave would totally be this super-deadly killer virus that would take out another 10% of the population, which simply isn't true.

I agree. With SARS, the symptoms were so severe and immediate that the sick could be quickly quarantined, and the virus was eradicated. SARS-CoV-2 has been so tricky because of the long incubation period and its ability to spread for days during the pre-symptomatic phase. Earlier and more severe symptoms would make it that much easier to quarantine the sick and prevent spread.

What do you mean the host can take more damage? The vaccines directly reduce damage because they interfere with viral replication and cell binding. They also prevent the majority of infections, and lower viral load in those who are infected.

But there's very little chance for random mutations because breakthrough infections are proving to be rare. Natural infection which leads to uncontrolled spread is what increases the risk for mutations. I get the point you're attempting to make, but in terms of Marek's Disease, the vaccines did nothing to prevent transmission, so there was nothing to stop the virus from continuing to spread and mutate. The SARS-CoV-2 vaccines hinder both infection and transmission.

From the viruses perspective, I mean. Source? The remainder of your statement only follows if this is true. Please note, I'm just logic-posting, no dog in the race. I haven't seen the evidence for reduced transmission after vaccination yet.

However, IF it does reduce transmission by say 90%, what about that 10% that escapes and spreads despite the vax? Wouldn't we be right back where we started after a short amount of time, but with a (likely) more deadly variant now? I'm not sure if vax-spreading would depend on the vax'd individual (their own immune response), or the strain they've been inoculated with (a more robust, vax-breaking variant), if that makes sense.

What do you think is suppressing the symptoms, anon? They're experiencing fewer symptoms because the virus is being directly hindered from entering and replicating in cells. The virus is only able to cause a mild infection, if it's able to cause any infection at all. This isn't like cough medicine where the urge to cough is being suppressed but the underlying cause remains. The vaccines are working by completely blocking in many cases, and limiting in breakthrough cases, the infection of cells.

To form more deadly variants means significant replication, followed by mutations, followed by some of those mutated variants finding another host. Limited to no replication means no mutations means no variants.

So the CDC recently stated that an incredibly small percentage of the vaccinated, something like 5k people out of 30 million, have tested positive. That's an incredibly low infection rate. So are there a significant amount of vaccinated people with asymptomatic infections who aren't being tested? Probably not. Studies on healthcare workers where PCR and antibody tests were used suggests that the vaccines are efficacious across the board, including preventing asymptomatic cases.

Well, it's more like 80-90% effective at preventing all infections. In those who are infected, viral load is 3-4x lower. So transmission rate is probably reduced even beyond 90%. But let's say it does get through and spread to someone else...is that person vaccinated? If they are, then it has more difficult odds to overcome. Keep in mind that protection from natural infection is something like 80%, and that's without factoring in the variants. So by letting the virus spread uncontrolled, it's also developing resistance immunity gained from prior infection. We're in the same boat either way, so the best bet is to provide as many obstacles as possible so that the virus can't spread uncontrolled. Limit the spread, limit the mutations, and eventually the virus goes away. It can only mutate so far before the spike protein is no longer useful for entering cells, so its ability to change isn't unlimited.

It's a possibility, especially with how things are going in India and Brazil, but we'd be in the same situation with no vaccines (or worse, since heavily vaccinated countries have dropping case rates). These variants occurred because the virus is spreading out of control, not because of the vaccines. The mRNA vaccines can be quickly updated if the spike protein mutates enough, but then there's still the issue of getting the boosters in people's arms.

Exactly. So the virus must evolve more severe to survive. When life is easy, there is little evolution, since being any better means little advantage. It's when it's hard but manageable where organisms evolve.
This is why you need to finish your antibiotics. You need to either not take them at all, (so that there is no need for the bacteria to evolve resistance) or take a high enough dose to completely obliterate them. But when you take just about enough to keep them suffocating, but alive, that's where every little advantage counts.
Exactly the same with everything similar, like pesticides or vaccines.
