>The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is moving to eliminate all accelerated math options prior to 11th grade, effectively keeping higher-achieving students from advancing as they usually would in the school system.

>Loudoun County school board member Ian Serotkin posted about the change via Facebook on Tuesday. According to Serotkin, he learned of the change the night prior during a briefing from staff on the Virginia Mathematics Pathway Initiative (VMPI).

If you read the article and look into this a little deeper, it's not typical right wing pearl clutching about academics.
It looks like Virginia has actually made it so every kid from K-10 takes the exact same math course.
The students will take "concepts" courses from 6th to 10th grade, there are no more algebra or geometry classes like is standard in most of the U.S.
Only in 11th and 12th can they take """"advanced"""" courses. Imagine you're 16 when you first learn how to do anything regarding algebra, how the hell are you supposed to function as an undergrad in anything math related?
Doesn't this make the problems worse? Rich people know how important a proper math education is and will hire a tutor or just put them in private school. Or just make them watch Khan Academy.
Imagine you had a kid and you looked at the curriculum for your state and saw that he wasn't going to learn what the equation of a line is until close to graduation.

I don't know but this is extremely strange to me. Aren't we just handicapping our kids?
TA's in weeder courses in a few years are going to have to take note of the Virginia kids.
