How do you think your environment affected your academic performance?

I don't like to complain, but if my parents had more formal education (both went only to elementary school) they could've explored more my curiosities. Well, I don't blame them, I also was lazy af during high school.

The only legitimate complaint I think I have was that I grew up in a highly violent home. Both my parents supported academics as an idea but they beat and hated each other to the point where they ruined each other financially and ended up eating my college funds (including scholarships) like ravenous hypocritical parasites.

It sucks to cope. I've seen people clearly less curious and somewhat dumber than me go to top colleges in the US, just because they had the right incentives for it, including parents with high academic level, money and the right school.

Obviously there's a large influence of society. If IQ has any merit to it, and I do think it does, it should be seen as a kind of max cap for what you can achieve (intellectually). But whether or not you live up to that potential has a lot to do with your upbringing and your oppertunites in life.

There's something I wonder about all this talk of environment vs genetic. Isn't there also a purely random factor ? A variation that can't be predicted by either genetics or envionment. The movements of molecules and the placements of neurons has a random factor in it. Isn't out brain structure conditioned by genes but ultimately random ? In that case the nature nurture debates get more complicated, genetics/environment/random

In theory, all this randomness is considered to be part of the environment. It could also be renamed as 'genetics vs non-genetics'.
And yes, your intuition is right: in models, you consider genetics, some environmental factors and the rest stays in the random component.

Having gone to three different universities with three radically different climates (Boreal, subarctic, tropical rainforest) I can say right now that environment plays heavily into academic performance. In the Boreal the only real variation is sunlight (winters are okay) so in the winter with less sunlight less work can get done. This explains why my spring semesters usually went better than fall semesters. As for the subarctic, extremes come in to play. In the summer when there is unlimited sunlight it feels like you can do anything and alot of work gets done while in the winter when its -40c and the sun only comes up for 2 hours every day you are too busy trying to not kill yourself to even care about school work. Finally, tropical rainforest right on the equator was actually kinda cozy. No serious variation in light or seasons meant everyday felt the same environmentally, allowed me to actually focus on my work as my circadian rhythm and vitamin D levels were not xonstantly getting fucked.
