He did. His history degree was a degree where you could take a broad variety of classes. He actually only took a few history classes. Mainly he took linguistics, but he also did actually study physics. He borrowed books and studied physics on the side when he was in his early 20s.
So the idea he didn't do physics and leapt straight into grad school is not accurate.
