Consider that before ships were very well designed and we had lots of oceanographic sensors, a crew encountering a rogue wave might just capsize and sink, so it would be far rarer for a crew to return to harbor AND have encountered a rogue wave. The ships that didn't return might have been written off as having been destroyed in a storm or run aground.
