windows has the most compatibility since its the most ubiquitous operating system. All of the servers in the world run linux yeah but they're all serving windows PCs. smartphones dont count, I can't plug my keyboard into any phone

if you're not someone who enjoys tailoring your environment to yourself or all the access and documentation of all the workings of a linux system for customizing, then yeah its pretty useless for you. though I fully recommend getting good with your computers. my proficiency and customization of emacs has saved me a great deal of time and pain and has made me way more efficient than my peers.

not any more so than windows. the OS stuff that linux gives you access to is useless for a scientist or mathematician. better to use an OS where all that stuff just werks instead of breaking constantly. macOS also still has the advantage that it is still POSIX and still has a BSD subsystem that apple relies on so the unix-y interface that linux users think they have a monopoly on is also a first class citizen in macOS. As WSL improves even windows is catching up on this front.

I’m a professional engineer and would use Mac any day over windows. Windows has its advantages but shit breaks constantly, and I don’t want to spend 6 hours a month watching Indians explain how to fix it on youtube.
