pic related is a tool for raw rote memorization. it's basically just a bunch of flashcards but for convenience since it's on your computer

i have only heard of med students and language learners use it. has anyone found it useful for their studies in other fields?

I've found it useful in programming but mostly for remembering terms and definitions of terms not for concepts in my experience the only way to learn concepts is to understand them

that's why you understand something before you make a flashcard for it, and every time it comes up you summarise the concept. the process of recalling and summarising something entails a deep processing of the meaning behind the concept, so it's an incredibly effective way to learn

Shit it takes so fucking long to make your own cards but its so worth it. Been using it daily for around 6 months already and for the first time I feel like I dominate the material.

This, it's pretty useful for remembering syntax or definitions.
I also use it to study Japanese and learn every capital of the world, but that's just for fun and to train my memory.

Very useful but also depends. I use it for taking notes about concepts and try to make each card as succinct as possible using my own definitions. However, using it only for rote memorization of disconnected facts or data is a terrible idea.

If you are using the nihongo 6000k deck it’s highly overrated unless you are already pretty advanced in the language.

What settings do you Guys use? Only if seeing stuff 3 times in 10 times if I rate it as good is way way too low for material I am getting tested on

Personally I use it for Japanese like everyone else.

What I'd really like to do though, is set up a card with variables. So instead of getting the same card, I'd get a card with randomized elements.

Then, I could use it for math. Solving the same problem won't help me remember math, but solving a different problem each time that uses the same method would keep me able to use that method.

I can't figure out how to do this within the system, but Anki is based on Python, right? And a lot of people make mods. If I knew more about how to peer under the hood, maybe I could make a little utility that rewrites my cards according to some logic? Then run that utility every now and then to change the seed?

Anyone have any ideas on how to do this?

Graduating interval is 20 days. Starting ease is 230, but I use the Auto Ease mod so it changes dynamically. Maximum interval is either 1 year or 2 years depending on whether it's an easy or hard deck.

I hear that the algorithms in SuperMemo are better. You have to pay for it, though I think that would be worth it to be more efficient. But I'm not sure if you can port Anki decks in, and I'm about 2 years in now so I think I'm staying put.

I used it to study for my undergrad introductory physics course. One of the parts of the final was filling in the blanks, with the source material being a 40 page glossary of all the physics terms related to the material.

Same, I've seen so many algorithms and so that I can soemtimes forget about them, so a little description of what they do and more or less how they work is always an useful reminder for competitions.

djt's core 2k/6k was frustrating garbage as a beginner, but actually kinda fun as an intermediate

Spend all your time getting child-cards to work and messing with the settings
Quizlit or whatever that website or apps are thatis that just lets you throw flash cards together is wya better.
I don’t need spaced repetition, I’ll study as often as as want and go through the ones I know super fast

I am a non-english med student. It takes a long time to do cards but honestly its better than reading something multiple times, memorizing shit and then forgetting it the moment you pass the test.
I feel like actually knowing a shitload and am way ahead of my classmates. I only do cards on things I actually feel is useful for the future job though. I am in the clinical part of my studies though. For preclinical I think anki would be really good for memorizing all the useless shit that you need to know to pass Anatomy, Biochem, Physiology etc., but it really would take a long time. Still seems more efficient than just rereading books and memorizing.

I guess I kind of feel intimidated by sheer scope of some of the subjects. For example neurology is like 600 pages. If I only made 5 cards per page I would still have to make 3000 cards. Its great if you already know your specialty and only do it for that, but I am not sure yet

The mistake here isnt anki, but rather that you have a Neurology book with 600 pages and plan on reading it all instead of using it as a reference. You dont need to read through that stuff, especially if you dont plan on going into neurology.
There are books made for students that only have the important stuff and include what is expected from a newly graduated doctor. For example Neurology, in 100 dense pages you can have 90% of all the information you actually need in medschool and as a doctor. 10 questions per page and in 1000 questions you have an entire subject knocked out.
Again, this doesnt really work for preclinical because there you actually have to work through these tedious 500-1000 page books with retarded, obscure questions that have no use in the real world.

Not it's not. I've heard about math students using it to remember definitions. The problem with that is that they won't have the concept itself in their mind but the words used to describe it when it should be the other way around.
