As in, get a good graph and idea of how they work ?
Start by finding out the function's domain of existence.
Then look for asymptotes, suggested by the edges of the domain. Once you have made sure to find all asymptotes, including sloped ones, proceed to find the maxima and minima by deriving, if it is possible, the function once.
This passage will also enable you to investigate where the function has a positive or negative slope, in accord with the sign of the first derivative. You can derive it again to find out, in keeping with the sign of the second derivative, where it is convex or concave and if there's any inflection point where its value is 0
Make sure you know how to carry out each of the things i listed on their own, before you attempt a complete study of a function.
