How unlikely were mitochondria?

If mitochondria have living relatives today that still function as intracellular parasites, why did something like mitochondria only appear once that we know of? Was it a massive fluke that it happened?

It was close to unbelievable. It would never pass in a science fiction book.
- a blue green algae was absorbed
- an extra membrane was put in place so it was not eaten
- the genetic material would be made part of us, even though it is a circular structure
- and on top would reproduce as it was with membrane and also passing on its genes
- it would thrive inside our cells

This is as close to a miracle we know.

Yes it was a huge fluke, and the full story is by no means well fleshed out. Self replicating proteins are another wtf moment. Many hurdles were crossed

There was also surviving the snowball earth and surviving the oxygen crisis.
Going from ??? to RNA to DNA was a series of flukes.
Switching from purple earth to green earth was probably not painless either.
