>>13006267>There are plenty of burger mathematicians and physicists that the average person will knowwhat a dumb statement, literally no one outside STEM knows a single modern mathematician, except possibly Terry Tao. there aren't any famous mathematicians, period. now, in terms of mathematical contributions, Japan has had pretty strong input in the 20th century especially in algebra. Iwasawa, Shimura, Taniyama, Nagata, Nakayama, Matsumura. in fact, considering how small a country they are and how they had never been "on the radar" before, it's actually quite astounding how many algebraists they produced in the 20th century
