Anyway, you go through the standard academic path. Get a bachelor's in physics, get a PhD, get a postdoc, get a tenure track position, hopefully get tenure. Along the way you work your fucking ass off, take any opportunity to get research experience (regardless of whether or not it's in "quantum gravity", because trust me you are not ready to work in that field until at least ~3 years into a PhD), and get your name out there, especially to professors who can provide you solid reference letters after forming a good working relationship with them.
