It's really disturbing to admit but my thoughts have basically become something like 50% English; 30% my native language; 20% German just from consuming all my online entertainment in foreign languages.

Spending too much time on 4chan, watching English movies without subtitles, and listening to English podcasts (Lex Friedman, Joe Rogan, etc) affected radically my thought processes.

I also have basic Japanese from reading RAW manga, Anime and playing Video-games.

I don't know how to translate well weeb vocabulary such as "Ara-ara", "Tsundere", "Senpai", "Mecha", "-Kun", "-Chan", "Daijobu", "Sugoi", etc.

I understand what you mean. Do you think you're less socially fluent in your native language than in english? I incidentally had this thought maybe a month ago: What if consuming non-native language media makes you less fluent in your own language? That isn't to say that you start making more mistakes (which may also happen) but is more or less supposed to be an observation about the fact that I often have little to talk about with someone in my native language because all my cultural references are from a language they don't speak as well. It may just to a large extent be the type of media though, but I think the language part is an extra layer that could prevent you from being as (socially) fluent as you could be.

Yes.

I'm kinda alienated / out of touch / cut out from the culture of my neighbors.

I don't know very well what's trendy or popular right now on Brazil, where I live.

Since the pandemic started all my Uni/college classes are now online, so I'm practically a Neet know who barely get out of room.

I spend most of my time online on English websites and rarely visit Brazilian websites.

I've also lost communication with my classmates.
That deepened the alienation.

Even if I wanted to hang out with Brazilian classmates in Online Videogames, I already have playmates who speak English.

So I basically end up thinking in a foreign language (English)

Forgetting too much my native language is hard tho, since it's like riding a bike.
Although as I said before, I don't know the current trendy Slangs in Brazilian Portuguese.
Or how to translate certain English terms that I internalized the meaning but I don't know the equivalent in Portuguese.

The term Neet itself is a slang term.

I know that NEET is an acronym for
"Not in Education, Employment, or Training"

But I don't know the equivalent of "Neet" in Brazilian Portuguese.

During the current pandemic, I have lived an almost Neet lifestyle.
But technically I'm not a Neet since I'm a STEM college student.

The COVID death count in Brazil is inflated, and exaggerated.

People who die with Brain Strokes, Heart attacks (mostly Elders) are counted as COVID deaths.

There are rumors that even people who die in Car traffic accidents are counted as COVID death, just because COVID was detected on their mangled body.

Media use those statistics just to scare people.
Power-hungry Politicians use those numbers as excuse to justify dystopian/authoritarian/draconian measures such as lockdowns.

The situation in Brazil isn't as bad as Mainstream media says.
I don't know anybody who died from COVID among the people I know in real life (relatives, professors, classmates, neighbors, etc).

Although the Neet life is comfy, so I prefer the Universities, Schools, and Businesses remain closed.

I kinda like how most classes are online.
Watching online classes from home is very comfy.

"Comfy" is "Confortável" (from Comfortable) in Brazilian Portuguese.
I like how English make the words shorter.
I never heard people in Brazil say the shortened "Comfy".

I get you latambro. I´m Argentinian and have been pretty much exclusively consuming English media since I´m 13 years old. I self taught programming/math in English, and now I find it really awkward to study those things in Spanish.
Plus it alienates you from your peers. I try to keep a good relationship with my normie friends from high school, because I just know it´s almost imposible to form new friendship with a normal person during online college and stuff. It feels like you´re a foreigner.

My Uni let engineering undergrad students get a Math degree alongside ("double major" in Math). But there are not "minors" here in Brazil.

You simply can't get a BSc in Engineering with Humanities "2nd field of study" for example.

Same for me.

Textbooks and Manuals are usually much better in original English.

Translations of STEM textbooks in Brazil are usually awful and full of $\LaTeX$ typing errors.

For example Halliday Physics:

As we all STEM fags know:
Newton's law of universal gravitation is
$F=G{\frac {m_{1}m_{2}}{r^{2}}}$

But in the bastartised Brazilian monkey translation (one of editions) it's written:
$F=G{\frac {m_{1}m_{2}}{r}}$

With $r$ on denominator instead of $r^{2}$

And there are typos like that in several pages.
How can the Brazilian editors/translators be so utterly retarded?

Been reading only English-speaking shit since I was 10. I am 28 now and only recently started getting interested in the life and politics of my country. My online and the 1.5 offline buddies I have are more or less in the same boat. It's very hard talking to normies or finding a gf. I just don't know what to discuss with them, can't even send a meme.

I feel ya. Sometimes back in both school and college, I ended up doing jokes that no one would understand because they were culturally alien to them. You just can't have normal conversations anymore without feeling like an americanized idiot. Also worst part of being americanized from an early age is that you take their retarded stances on some things as facts of life but don't realize they don't apply in your own culture and country... I missed out in so much because of that.

there is another phenomenon going on that may be closely related: english penetrates other languages so much that not only does it affect the terminology which is normal but it also changes the grammar! like you know how a lot of times you cannot directly translate words like get or take or good or a certain fixed constructs etc. you have to find an equivalent term or expression in your language. but i think it is due to low iq translators that keep translating word by word that those words that used to sound very awkward are getting gradually accepted. i noticed this happens in sports a lot thanks to the lazy and pretentious announcers who sometimes do it on purpose and then it becomes fashionable to talk like that.

I'm not surprised, our schools are quite bad at teaching English. The "level" caps at grade 8, and stays the same until you graduate from college. It's ridiculous. I was very lucky to learn early by myself, to play vidya and browse the Internet.

How did Wngland design such a good language bros? It's probably the best language in the world for poetry, extremely high information transfer rate without any autistic chinkspeak, and it can incorporate any word from any other language almost seamlessly. How did the anglos do it? Other Germanic languages suck, so it has to be something from Latin.

I love how grammatical Inflections (verbs conjugation, words declension) in English are so much easier and simpler than most Languages.

German, Latin, Greek and East European languages (Russian, etc) have Cases, Genders, etc.

Hungarian and Czech grammatical Inflections are particularly nightmarish...

Finish, Icelandic and Basque grammars are also pretty hardcore.

As a Brazilian Portuguese speakers I also find
Romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, etc) grammatical Inflections very cumbersome.

English grammar is much easier and simpler.

Well yes, English does shun extremely complex grammar. In turn its vocabulary is MASSIVE, with like 10 different small variations on most common words. Happy, elated, jolly, ect. While this is good if you actually use it natively, it encourages you to just give up other languages and extend the ceiling on your English vocabulary, which I dont like. If you actually want to not sound like a retard or a pajeet (what's the difference amiright?) then the grammar barrier is tiny compared to the expressivity wall.

People who are somewhat good at english have tendency to employ english words in their writing. Any complex words are created from chinese-rooted parts. Its impposible to create new word from pure-native words. I thinks vietnamese is a primitive language. I noticed speak partterns in english are more likely to describe the 'context' first, then 'what happen' afterward. Speak partterns in vietnamese are more likely to be in reverse of that, which will work good inside a narrow range of contexts because the reader can assume the context, but will be very sucks when things get complicated

What are you talking about? Vietnamese is topic first, English doesn't have topic at all. People skip to the comment part and you need to guess what they are talking about.

When I mean it's hard to translate I say that there is not 1 to 1 direct translation.

"based(EN)" can mean:
#1 "based on", "based upon" (original meaning)
#2 "cool", "nice", "awesome", "great" but with a /pol/ neonazi racist bent/connotation, since its originated from there.

"baseado(PT)" means only #1

"maneiro", "bacana", "jóia", "show de bola" etc from Portuguese are all terms that mean "nice" , "great" or "awesome".
But there is no "awesome but with a racist bent" word in Portuguese

Also noticed this. A lot of grammatical errors people are increasingly making in my language can be explained by them subjecting it to English grammar. For instance, by putting the preposition "in" before a year number, which makes sense in English, but is completely incorrect here.

If I had kids :

I'd speak to them in a Native and English mix.

If I move to an Anglo country after college then probably I'd use more English
If I remain in my home nation I'd use more Native.
But I'd want them to reach Advanced English level regardless.

Even if I chose to stay in my home nation:
I'd push them hard to read texts in English and watch videos without subtitles.

Native language, of course. Having a connection to family/countrymen in the real language is extremely important. English is shit and is easily/automatically picked up anyway due to ubiquitous American media and what have you. Even if I moved to an English speaking country (never will) and raised my kids there, I would still speak to them in my native language. It would also be essential for them when visiting the homeland/other family members. Imagine not being able to converse with your grandparents in a shared native language

Only like 2% of mexicans speak nahuatl still. (source: im mexican, and I think its sad). But we do have a bunch of loanwords and toponymics in our "dialect" and we learn how to pronounce it from an early age, primarily because you would not be able to pronounce most cities names otherwise.
