wouldn't it be just a question of making harmless bacteria evolve to plastic eating bacteria in a soup through artificial selection?

There are. Plastics in general are not a problem. I have seen no evidence at all that inert microplastics are any different from the mixture of organics modelecules naturally found in the ocean anyway.

I read that in South Asia they’ve been using plastic eating bacteria to reduce pollutants. Theres a difference between plastic consuming bacteria and bacteria that create toxin that destroys plastic.
