I mean, this could probably work as a permanent Lunar ferry. Just a single vacuum raptor, remove most of the crew space to enlarge the cargo hold. You could deploy them from 18m Starship once that's available and you need something to do with obsolete 9m Starships.

post if you find anything interesting in the original HLS requirements, I’m interested to see how formal they were about giving extra points to a future-capable architecture because that seems like one of the main reasons Starship won (along with cost) and could be valid grounds for a challenge from either of the two losers if NASA wasn’t explicit about it. e.g. Starship having 100T payload capacity might by the letter of the requirements not actually be worth any points over another lander that barely hits the required 850kg payload mark

Because you have to get tools to rip out the inner tanks and seal the ass of it in space. It being a fully reusable vehicle only exacerbates the problem. Why make it a wet work shop when you could launch dozens of 8 meter tins can and make a full rotating station with starship for a cost hundreds of times lower then the cost required to make the ISS? People severely underestimate how big space stations starship could make.

/sfg/ really doesn't have much ambition does it? NASA should spend 10ish billion to make a space station with 100x the mass of the ISS, assuming a raw launch cost of 200k per ton (200$/kilogram or 20m per launch, since SpaceX still has to make money off this), the launch cost alone would cost 8 billion to send such a thing into orbit. it'd certainly be a worthy replacement of the iss, and it could even potentially have multiple rotating sections with different gravities to study. NASA could rent it out to corporations, scientific organizations, the military, hell they could even turn part of it into a space hotel

The wet workshop idea was great in the shuttle era with orangetank but Starship makes it all redundant.
4 Starships attached together via an adapter in LEO would be the largest space station ever built and would cost less than $100 million. No reason to ever build another station.

One of my profs was on a team to get additive components on Perseverance. the amount of bureaucracy and mass / engineering budget red tape was insane.

come on dude, don't fall for the "anything less than permanent 1G is highly dangerous to your health" meme, study the effect of different gravity levels on people by doing real studies such as "a thousand people who have spent >1 year on Mars: the health results" or the like, don't build whole fucking wacky mutli-rotating stations just to study an as-yet imaginary problem, so far all we know is people who spend many months in ZERO gravity lose some bone-mass and muscle (what a huge surprise!)

False, Falcon 9 commercial launch costs are like around 2000$/pound and Falcon Heavy is below 2000, internal launch costs for Falcon 9 are like 961$/kilogram to LEO.

No, that's what SpaceX CLAIMS their launch costs are on the website. Actual studies of the subject come out to ten times that figure. SpaceX isn't coming anywhere close to making costs per pound ten times cheaper; they'd put every other launch provider out of business overnight and immediately become one of the most valuable corporations on the planet.

I think even with Starship flying it could have potential if they stripped the crew cabin and had it carry an underslung robotic bulldozer or science rover. There's bound to be some areas of interest that are too rocky or unlevel for Starship's fat ass to land in without a prepared surface.

They don't have enough customers and the ESA doesn't require such massive payloads to LEO. Dragon XL has no ability to reenter without burning up. Getting it human rated would cost billions that NASA hasn't given them and they already have Crew Dragon which can just meet Starship in LEO before heading off to the Moon, detach before the landing, then rendezvous again before coming back to earth. This would be much safer than Orion.

There isn't really any ethanol feedstock unless you want to grow sugar beets which would take up valuable bed space you could use for something else. I imagine other drugs will be more popular on Mars and they would cost less than imported alcohol.

I mean they still really missed this train - by the time it's operational Starship will be already landing on Moon and likely even Mars
but it's not a terrible concept and if they are lucky they could find a niche even with Starship getting the large majority of launches
1 core + 0-4 boosters allows for more flexibility than using Starship when rideshare isn't an option
and methalox means cheaper refurbish than old F9/FH - in theory

That will be interesting to see. Space Station Freedom with Skylab sized modules, and the space dock. Some sort of X-33 design. And maybe they will upgrade the Pathfinder with CERV to be more like the actual Block II proposal.

I think season 2 might end with a teaser of the ISS in the 90s. Similar to how season 2 teased the Sea Dragon in the 80s.
It would be a good way tease that they've moved past the conflict regarding the moon and have started cooperating on the way to Mars. Alternately they could just make the Soviet Union never collapse and keep it going to Mars, but I think Mars itself provides enough drama without the cold war still going.

Let me overestimate and say that Starship costs $8 million each.
>4 Starships = $32 million
The adaptor module would have 2 docking ports on each side that would allow Dragon/Soyuz/Other to dock to the station as the Starships would act as giant modules and stay in space until the station is decommissioned.
>Adaptor module overestimation = $150 million
>Barebones station cost = $182 million
Of course this does not take into account all the expensive equipment and supplies that is needed to operate and live in a space station and I don't know how much it would cost but putting up 4,400 cubic meters of pressurized volume into space for less than $200 million all but demands that the next American Space Station would be built out of Starships

I would prefer Starship to launch independent modules. The walls really oughta be thicker and this way they don't slow down their production by trying to outfit a 120 ton rocket to be a space station. They would be more functional since you can have ports where the nose and engine section would otherwise be. They could build modules on a site near Boca Chica and then move them down the road for payload integration since it would be much easier to move around.

It has been a couple days, but its still kind of unreal about how much of the future of American spaceflight is solely in SpaceX's hand. Crew dragon is the only working man-rated capsule. Cargo to both ISS and moon. Lunar starship. Not to mention all the NSSL payloads for the Falcon Heavy. If Elon doesn't deliver then we are fucking toast. Is SpaceX scaling up personnel for all this work? I see an absolute shitton of job openings, but I know its kinda hell to work there unless you're like mid-20s without a family.

Certain types of radiation impacting metal can generate different, far more dangerous types of radiation. The amount of thickness actually needed to prevent that physical process will make heavily armored tanks look like tinfoil packaging in comparison.

For usefully sized payloads you'd need multiple square kilometers of solar sail material, at which point you're going to need Starship sized launch vehicles anyway. There's no substitute for thrust inside a planetary gravity well. I would have gone for BE4 in the same situation. Back then we didn't know just how short BO would fall of expectations, but the one thing you can count on is AR being a disappointment.
