So how is an mRNA vaccine any different from just catching the virus?
Both mechanisms of immunity involve your body producing antibodies which interact with the spike protein to prevent cell infection.
If the mRNA vaccine is an acceptable form of immunization, shouldn't catching the virus also be? Am I just retarded?

Whole viruses are bad. Catching the virus for immunity is silly obviously.
The point I'm making is, if the mRNA vaccine is an effective means of immunization, then catching the virus should be just as effective. So if I had the virus already, why do I need to get vaccinated?

Virus makes full virus which can make you pretty sick (I was fine) and your body make antibodies which bind to the S protein to block cells from interacting with the S protein, which is the mechanism of infection.
mRNA vaccine injects mRNA which makes your cells make just the S protein and the exact same immune response inhibits the S protein.

The actual infection produces many different antibodies that target different parts of the virus, as well as a memory to that virus. The vaccine is a single antibody manufactured by your immune cells to bind to the spike protein of covid, neutralizing the virus.

In short, getting Covid is far superior to the vaccine in terms of immunity.

I'm going to put this very simply so that anyone could understand it.

That mRNA is like a message telling your body that it needs to make the immune response to the virus that gives instructions on how to make it. You don't get the virus, suffer the effects of the virus, or transmit the virus in the course of making it. Should you happen to catch the virus your immune system is as ready for it as it's going to be.

Getting the virus means that your body has to figure out that it has the virus, write up messages telling your cells to make the appropriate immune response, and then play catch up to the virus. You will have been sick, possibly fatally sick or catastrophically sick by the time your body has caught up. You will probably have transmitted the virus to others by then as well when it was incubating in your body.

I don't know(and no one is still sure how long the natural or vaccination immunity actually lasts), and I agree with your thought process
With the 'traditional' vaccines at least(JJ, AZ, etc.) there's additives which supposedly make your immune response more aggressive, but the mRNA vaccine by mechanism should be no different than the proper viral protein
I'm assuming it's just a government policy because it's easier to track the number of people who have definitely been vaccinated, rather than trying to separate the normal people who acquired natural immunity, from generic antivax schizos
Also don't forget the profit for vaccine manufacturers and distributors

See, I agree with you guys and that's the conclusion I reached by following the science. However, the CDC seems to disagree. Their webpage suggests that a vaccine will provide more immunity than catching the virus so I was just curious if anyone knew of any data to back that up.

I think it's unwise to compare people who are hesitant about the covid vaccines to generic antivaxxers. The thought processes are different; most people hesitant about the covid vaccine are just acting rationally, and comparing them to schizos, instead of reasoning, just seems likely to make them start to think the schizos were right. Obviously the usual schizos are mouthing their usual garbage about the covid vaccine, but I think it's uninformed to equate them to the much larger group that's fine with every other vaccine and is just hesitant about personally receiving a covid vaccine, which is new, in the case of the mRNA vaccine novel, and unlikely to make a practical difference in their life. So imagine a virus as a very small bacteria. If it’s not a virion it’s not a virus. Viral or virulence doesn’t denote a virus. So it has several pathways of replication. The theory of which is a safer immunization is up for debate. You have to be careful about situations like these. I heard in west Africa there were immunization stations set up that left men sterile. Because the vaccine had blocked sperm image replication. Sort of like putting storm doors. So many spent their youths dedicating a lot of their time to the reproductive medicine lobby.

Not necessarily. You're getting a measured dose of the vaccine, you're not getting a measured dose of the virus. Unfortunately, you get the best immune response from severe infections. If you had a mild infection, you may have only developed weak, short-term immunity.

The less specific antibodies are, the less likely is the development of ADE. Only time will tell, but people who got non-mRNA shots are more susceptible to develop ADE when a new mutant appears, which are discovered pretty frequently at this point, and it's only going to get worse, especially considering all sorts of animals are catching the coronavirus, even pets. Of course, there have not been confirmed cases of ADE in humans yet, but it can't be ruled out.

Aren't the mRNA vaccines very specific, though? I would think a response to a single protein would make it much more specific than a response to an entire virus, which would lead to a variety of different antibodies.

Not in real world scenarios, no. People who had mild or asymptomatic infections developed few antibodies, and were more prone to re-infection (though asymptomatic re-infections seemed to be common, so there's still some immune memory happening). The vaccines seem to produce a massive antibody response in the majority of people. It's still kind of up in the air what effect the new variants will have on both types of immunity.

The biggest group against the mRNA vaccines is the Chinese government, their Centre for Disease Control continually puts out releases questioning the safety. I do not know if they have access to the vaccine to do studies, but a lot of stuff online that the 'antivax' types cite goes back to Chinese information.
You can see further evidence for this with them claiming they will only allow people with the Chinese vaccine to enter the country swiftly, trying to force olympic athletes to get their vaccine instead of others. I do not know why they care so much. I'm curious what data and evidence they rely on.

The complaint is that the vaccine generates just the spike and the resulting immunity would be different from the infection immunity but there are other vaccines that use just key proteins without them being produced in the body and no catastrophe came of it.

It's true of vaccines in general. In one situation, something is injected into the blood stream, compared to an infection that tends to locally infect the upper respiratory tract. With SARS-CoV-2, people who end up with more systemic infections (lungs, other organs) have the strongest immune response. We also need to differentiate between the innate, acute immune response and the adaptive immune response. When you feel awful from an infection, it's the innate immune system going to work, but it's the adaptive immune system that protects you from the same threat in the future. With SARS-CoV-2, a systemic infection will trigger the development of a much more viable adaptive immune response because it's seen as a serious threat. The vaccine is able to do the same thing, without (typically) triggering the innate immune system to the same degree.
