my highschool biology teacher said one time something along the lines of: "nothing in science is hard, if you can't make sense of a system you are doing something wrong"
does this statement hold any truth ?

if he purely means making sense of something that's already established then yes, maybe. the context of what he said is not totally clear. new discoveries are often not trivial at all, and in the context of figuring out "what you're doing wrong" in the process of scientific advancement, that can be very hard. richard feynman said something similar about science not being "difficult", that while it's an enormous scaffolding, each constituent is fairly simple.

it's like an "easy" math problem that you need to use a trick you're unfamiliar with to get to the answer. once you see the trick, of course it's easy, but coming up with the trick yourself can be hard.

I'm not though. You won't find a PhD working as a high school teacher in Europe either, unless perhaps it's somebody doing charity part time work on the side (not that I have ever seen a case of this). Where the fuck do you live that such a thing is not a massive outlier?

As for MSc, where I live an MSc is a requirement to teach above 9th grade, but most of them are pedagogy or special subject-teacher MScs.

In Europe where being a teacher is actually a very comfy and safe job and getting education doesn't bankrup you. So getting a PhD is just a matter of having time and really wanting to do it. You might even find NonComissioned Officers in PhD programs or even nuns and monks that simply want to.

O course, don't expect them in programs named: High energy physics or genetic engineering. Maybe other things like philosophy, psychology, history or even economics.

I am high school theology teacher, my two colleagues both have PhD's in theology and we all make around 35k a year.
This alone is why I am leaving the humanities, they are in effect useless. And not worth the effort.

With how it's directly linked to a specific gene, I assume the 'easiest' cure in the future will be a genetic one, so those already born with it might be out of luck
I'm a medfag and loved the microbiology class we had in uni, so at least it's gonna be interesting

Other then that I did fuck up, but I was dying and I was 23. When your really considering your mortality, religion and faith offers something science can never. If you haven't been there, you wouldn't understand. This is all I can say.

sounds like he doesn't know what real science is like, given that hes just a high school bio teacher. sure science classes are easy as long as you are a rational person because everything is spoonfed to you, especially in high school. being at the forefront of research and being the person to come up with the theoretical frameworks that explain reality is one of the hardest things you can do though.

That's a good question actually. I would say, no. But it also depends on what you are trying to discover in the first place. I would think that in a field like theoretical physics (given that you are a fucking genius though) you possibly could be able think of a model that suddenly is better than the copenhagen interpretation in quantum mechanics. But the odds of this happening are very low. In the end, you will also have to work with others anyway, especially if your theory needs proof-checking.

Sadly, there are people like that. Luckily though, they don't often manage to get through it. I've only seen people succeed who were actually passionate about their field and not just doing it for ze mone or the title.
