maybe he read the background math from other books. i think the consensus is that witten has an amazing talent for reading math and understanding it quickly—his thesis under David Gross was mostly vanilla particle physics but during his postdoc at harvard within a few years he was doing super advanced math. he said in interviews that Sidney Coleman alerted him to some stuff in math, but Sidney was never super mathematical. the only explanation is that he just read math books and journals and got incredible at it on his own. maybe he went to a few math seminars at harvard but it was certainly self-taught

Ramanujan would still have got in today. The difference is that Ramanujan had already proved himself by showing impressive results. They would bend the rules if you could show you've already accomplished some.
You are right that Witten would probably have the door slammed in his face though.
But then again Ramanujan would probably get shat on today for not publishing enough or not publishing the right stuff.

Doesn't sound like what I was thinking of. Since graduating what I miss most is having an advisor that can lead you in the right direction on problems that are suitable for your abilities and ideas for what to focus on. Plus the feedback on what you write was invaluable. That doesn't exist if you're out of academia it seems.

In my case it was actually "most courses". Only in the Master's Programme did we have a clear focus on pedagogical and didactical issues. And true, the preparation service for teachers is often a tougher filter - the problem is that Germany is running into a lack of about 35,000 teachers in 2025 (might be worse due to Covid, I don't know) and people who absolutely should be filtered out might not be. That will of course spiral into the next generation as I do believe that cannot really be much of a positive force for most of my pupils but fuck I can be the biggest negative force for a forming part of their lives. And those fuckers who don't really care about teaching (in Germany we say "those that just want their afternoon free") won't get filtered I fear.
