Look at the time between when the cube first touches the portal and when it's entirely out the other end. Notice how the cube has a velocity, otherwise it wouldn't be coming out the other end at all. Why would it suddenly lose that velocity, then? Portals put you out the other side with your momentum in their reference frame.

The input and output portal occupy the same point in space. Which means you have to treat all momentum as being w.r.t. the combined aperture - in which case the cube has momentum as it passes through the aperture.

I think this is a bit misleading, or perhaps there is not a clear way to pick the correct frame. You can just as easily justify the cube being like Buster Keaton standing still as the barn wall falls with a perfectly placed window allowing him to stay in place and unmoving. Then it would simply be an interesting interaction of gravity. I'm curious how gravity would act or bend space-time near the portals. If orange and blue were stationary, but blue was near Jupiter and orange near Earth, would you get sucked into blue?

As far as force and field propagation, I've no idea - but as far as just simple motion between frames goes the only logically and physically consistent model is one where the momentum with respect to the aperture is conserved as objects cross between reference frames.

Therefore, in OP’s image once the momentum of the first portal changes (when the brakes engage and the piston stops falling), the momentum of the second portal also changes, and the block stops moving with respect to the aperture.

In your image, since the portals act (to anything passing through them) as if they are attached and occupy the same space, the second portal has the same momentum as the first portal, and the hand passes through gently and pets the rabbit.

Different anon - does talking about the momentum of the portal even make physical sense if we're talking about a point in space rather than a tangible object? I would think if that were the case then the portal has no momentum - the platform moving just changes the configuration of the 'bridge' joining the two points in space.

When the block is going through the portal it's a process so the piston hasn't made contact with the pedestal yet and thus the block would carry with it the momentum from the moment that it enters the portal to the moment that the piston makes contact with the pedestal.

I literally just explained it. Let’s simplify this for you. I’ll calculate everything wrt the aperture.

Portal A and B have velocity 0.
Cube and rest of world have velocity 1.
Cube enters Portal A at velocity 1.
Cube exits Portal B at velocity 1.
Breaks engage on Portal A.
Portal A now has velocity 1 (now comes the stage that B friends don’t understand. To anything passing through the portals, Portals A and B behave as if connected and occupying the same space. Therefore,)

From GR, we know that its impossible to know whos truly moving and whos still. So we have consider 2 cases with different observers.

From the point of view of the orange portal, the block and table are moving relative to you, so it must be moving, therefore, you should expect to see it exit from the blue portal at the same velocity you observed it go in.

If you are the cube, you will see the see the yellow portal approaching, or moving relative to you. You would then enter the orange portal and leave blue portal. However, the portal's velocity can't change instantaneously, so the blue portal should be moving away at the same velocity.

Since in both cases, the other object is moving afterwards, and external observer would see either the block or the portals moving, so case A is not possible

You could use a similar logic to misinterpret other points of reference. If you're in a car and it stops, there is no reason the buildings outside should stop moving just because the car stopped correct? I mean, relative to you and the car they were moving.

When the portal stops you will have half the cube stationary, and the other half of the cube with momentum (relative to the room). The result with be neither A or B. Depending on the strength of the cube, and the rate of deceleration of the portal, the cube will either shear in half at the portal boundary, or the moving half of the cube will share its momentum with the stationary half, resulting in B, but with half the velocity.

This is some basic principles that people seem to miss a lot.

Portals break the space symmetry. Thus by definition they do not conserve momentum. They maintain time symmetry so they maintain energy, thus it can only be A.

It really depends on the how fast the portal was moving, how quickly it decelerates and the tensile strength of flesh. If the portal was moving slowly before it stopped then the body would not be pulled through because the arm is much less massive than the body. At higher speeds the arm would be sheared in half. I am not sure if the arm could have sufficient momentum to pull the body through before reaching breaking point.

I've discovered that the real reason people disagree about the cube is because people are operating on different definitions of "velocity". If velocity is distance/time, it's B. If velocity is some type of aetheric energy or a quantifiable "momentum" divorced from velocity and frame of reference, it's A.

The arm has to literally move to exit the portal, therefore it has to have velocity. Remember the arm is made up of atoms, once an atom has left the portal it would behave as per normal physics. And if it looks like its moving then its moving. The only way for it to be A is for the portals influence to somehow extend beyond its surface. Now there is nothing stopping you from defining the portal this way, but you have to actually define it. I think it would be extremely difficult to create a self-consistent model that would result in A.

My suspicion is if you actually could generate portals like this the space around would be HEAVILY warped due to the two portal 'ends' meeting up. You probably wouldn't have clean edges on the portals, it would look more like one weird wormhole in that general vicinity. The gravitational disturbance created by moving such a monstrosity would effectively suck the cube through and do all sorts of other havoc as well

How can an object outside of a car not have any velocity in relation to the car after it stops? If the car is moving at 100mph the object should continuosly move the opposite direction of the car because of inertia, after the car is stationary. This is consistent with B.

VELOCITY WITH RESPECT TO WHAT?

This is the question A fags constantly seem to either get wrong or just blatantly ignore. There is no such thing as absolute velocity so if your argument is that velocity/momentum is conserved going through a portal, you have to define velocity/momentum with respect to WHAT?

Portals do not add any momentum based on relative motion, otherwise if you ran through a portal you would come out the other way at 2x velocity. All a portal does is connect two spaces. In OPs scenario the cube would simply be materialized "slice by slice" on the other side.

Exactly. But the slice that appears next has to push forward the one that previously appeared. This creates pressure that propells the cube forward, so the answer is B.

It the blue portal was also moving backwards at the same speed the orange portal is going down, there would be room for every layer that appears, therefore the cube will not experience pressure and not be propelled forward.

If we’re in any kind of gravitational potential well where there is a minute difference in acceleration between the two frames, or of one of the frames is moving differently with respect to the other? Yes - though the magnitude of the hop will obviously depend on by he degree of difference between the two frames. In the case of a slab that is thin but finite and small, the hop may be ridiculously small but it is still a hop.

Think of another difference, say the orientation of the two portals on the thin slab - at 0 degrees you’re not going to notice a hop, not probably at 1 or 2... but by the time you start dealing with a wedged slab with an angle of, say, 10, 15, 30 degrees you’re going to start noticing some kind of shifting of the block - the more the two frames differ from one another the more the ‘hula hoop’ model of A breaks down.

this is basic relativity son, if you're blind folded and sitting in a chair on a train(at a constant speed), it feels identical to sitting in a chair on still ground. your hand doesnt know its velocity, the only thing we can actually observe is change in velocity. And with a portal being a bridge between reference frames, there isnt any inherit reason to assume theyd impart any extra motion on their own, rather the speed of any object between the portals will be exactly the same. so you can stick your hand through the portal and be pushed by wind resistance, but acceleration is canceled out between the surfaces of the two portals

The answer is B. At first I was going to say A but B is the only one that makes sense after consideration for two reasons.

1) The cube would not even be able to leave the blue portal unless it had some velocity. So for A to even happen you have to admit that the cube moves with velocity. Which velocity does it move with? The only answer to this question is the relative velocity that it passes through the yellow portal with (the speed of the falling portal) - therefore, it shoots into the air.

2) Momentum of objects with respect to the reference frame of the portal must be maintained. Imagine the yellow portal is staying still and the universe moves around it. The scenario is therefore equivalent to the portal staying still and the cube and platform rushing upwards and into it. This thought experiment should make the answer obvious.
